AVG Lauches Free Link Scanner
AVG's new free link scanner tool aims to detect some of the two million web pages that are infected with malware in real time.
With nearly 60 per cent of these pages shut down on a daily basis or moving to a different destination on the web, scanning for infected pages is a never-ending ordeal.
Billions of links are sent around the world via emails and social-networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
LinkScanner, a free download, analyses these links and reveals whether the link harbours a threat, according to the company.
The software is similar to McAfee's SiteAdvisor that rates websites according to their safety.
Like SiteAdvisor, LinkScanner works on search results from Google, Yahoo and MSN.
Whenever surfers search using these search engines, they will see safety rankings for all search results.
LinkScanner will also scan your bookmarks as well as links contained in instant messages and emails before you open them to ensure they are safe, the company said.
"It's our belief that every computer user has the right to basic security protection, regardless of the ability to pay,? said J R Smith, chief executive of AVG Technologies.
"These dangerous web pages threaten to disrupt the very fabric of the internet as well as how we view and use it; posing an even bigger threat to users than viruses," Smith added.
LinkScanner runs on Windows XP and Vista.

BBC iPlayer to go Hi-Def
The BBC is to offer programmes in high definition (HD) through its online catch-up service, the iPlayer.
Not all programmes will be available in HD, though it isn't just restricted to downloads and will be available to surfers streaming content as well.
Doctor Who and Dragons' Den are two of the programmes that will be available in HD.
The iPlayer will also have an updated speed diagnostic tool, which can tell how fast your broadband connection is and automatically adjust itself to give you the best possible viewing experience.
The new version of iPlayer Desktop software is to be fully released too, the BBC said.
The iPlayer has proved to be a controversial service with many criticising the lack of support for any platforms other than Windows when it first launched.
Back in December 2008, the corporation announced Mac and Linux support on the iPlayer for the first time.
Catch-up rival 4oD has also recently introduced support for Mac and Linux.
